Has Fernando Alonso made the right decision to remain with Aston Martin?

Fernando Alonso has confirmed he will remain at Aston Martin for the 2027 season, ending speculation over his long-term future in Formula 1.

The two-time world champion has endured a difficult year with the Silverstone-based outfit, sitting 19th in the drivers' standings with just three points after 15 rounds. 

Alonso retired from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last time out, citing an unexplained loss of around 1.5 seconds per lap on the straights, despite Honda telemetry showing no obvious faults.

The Spaniard has also dealt with severe cockpit vibrations from the Honda power unit throughout the campaign, which caused numbness in his hands and feet and sparked early-season concerns over potential nerve damage.

Technical boss Adrian Newey has already identified a development overhaul for next year, with refined power unit ratios planned to improve integration between chassis and engine. 

Alonso has previously indicated that his decision on racing beyond 2026 hinges more on the broader direction of the sport's regulations than on Aston Martin's current competitiveness.
